What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is an innovative orthodontic system that utilizes custom-made, clear thermoplastic aligners to straighten teeth and correct bite issues. Made from smooth, BPA-free SmartTrack material, these virtually invisible aligners are designed to fit snugly over your teeth and apply gentle, consistent pressure to move them into proper alignment over time.

Unlike traditional metal braces that use brackets and wires permanently fixed to your teeth, Invisalign aligners are completely removable. This means you can take them out when eating, drinking, brushing, and flossing, giving you much more freedom and flexibility throughout your treatment. Because the aligners are nearly invisible, most people won't even notice you're wearing them, making Invisalign an excellent choice for adults and teens who want to straighten their teeth without drawing attention to their orthodontic treatment.

While traditional braces come with dietary restrictions due to the risk of damaging brackets or wires, Invisalign has no such limitations. Simply remove your aligners before meals and enjoy all your favorite foods without worry. The clear aligners also eliminate the mouth irritation and discomfort that metal brackets and wires can sometimes cause, offering a more comfortable orthodontic experience overall.

How Does Invisalign Work?

During your initial visit, Dr. Carl or Dr. Brunson will examine your teeth and discuss your smile goals to determine if Invisalign is the right treatment option for you. We'll take detailed photographs and advanced 3D digital scans of your teeth, which are used to create a precise computer model of your mouth.

Using this 3D model, we'll map out the exact movements your teeth need to make and show you a virtual representation of how your smile will transform throughout treatment. This technology allows you to see your expected results before you even begin wearing your aligners. Once you approve the treatment plan, your custom aligner series will be fabricated specifically for your unique smile.

When your aligners arrive, we'll provide you with your first few sets and give you detailed instructions on how to insert and remove them properly. You'll wear each set of aligners for approximately one to two weeks, depending on your specific treatment plan. Each aligner is slightly different from the last, designed to make incremental adjustments that gradually move your teeth into their final positions.

Throughout your treatment, you'll progress through your series of aligners in sequence, with each one building on the progress of the previous set. Most patients require between 20 to 30 sets of aligners, though this varies depending on the complexity of your case. The entire treatment process typically takes 12 to 18 months, though some cases may be completed in as little as six months while more complex cases may take up to 24 months.

Invisalign can effectively correct a wide range of orthodontic issues, including moderate to severe crowding, gaps and spacing problems, overbites, underbites, crossbites, and protruding teeth. While Invisalign works wonderfully for most bite correction needs, severe cases involving significant underbites, overbites, or teeth that have rotated more than 20 degrees may still require traditional braces for optimal results.

Benefits of Invisalign

Patients choose Invisalign for numerous reasons, with discretion being one of the most appealing advantages. The clear aligners are virtually invisible, allowing you to straighten your teeth without the self-consciousness that sometimes accompanies metal braces. This makes Invisalign particularly popular among professionals, adults, and teens who want to improve their smiles without everyone knowing they're undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Comfort is another significant benefit. The smooth plastic aligners won't irritate your cheeks, lips, or gums the way metal brackets and wires can. You won't experience the mouth sores or irritation that can occur with metal braces, and there are no sharp edges or protruding wires to worry about.

Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is much easier with Invisalign. Since the aligners are removable, you can brush and floss your teeth normally without having to navigate around brackets and wires. This helps you keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment and reduces your risk of developing cavities or gum disease. You'll also clean your aligners regularly by gently brushing them and rinsing them with lukewarm water, keeping both your aligners and your mouth fresh and clean.

The removability factor also means no dietary restrictions. Unlike with traditional braces where you must avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods, patients who choose Invisalign can continue eating everything they enjoy. Simply remove your aligners before meals and snacks, then brush your teeth before putting them back in.

What to Expect During Treatment

Success with Invisalign requires commitment and compliance. For optimal results, you must wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day, removing them only for eating, drinking anything other than water, and oral hygiene. Failing to wear your aligners for the recommended duration can delay your progress and extend your treatment time
.
You'll visit our office approximately every six to eight weeks so we can monitor your progress, ensure your teeth are moving as planned, and provide you with your next sets of aligners. These checkups are typically quick and convenient, requiring much less time than traditional braces adjustment appointments.Close up of a hand holding a pair of Invisalign clear aligners

Some patients experience mild discomfort or pressure when switching to a new set of aligners, which is completely normal and indicates that your teeth are moving as intended. This sensation typically subsides within a day or two as your mouth adjusts to each new aligner.

It's worth noting that while Invisalign is an excellent solution for many patients, traditional braces may be more appropriate in certain situations. During your consultation, our dentists will thoroughly evaluate your specific needs and recommend the treatment option most likely to achieve your desired results.
