Dental Implants

3D rendering of a dental implant and its components (screw, abutment, and crown) being placed into the jawDental implants are restorative dental prostheses used to misplace missing teeth. They are surgical, dental fixtures placed in the jawbone to act as artificial roots to hold a pontic or a bridge. Dental implants closely mimic a natural tooth as it stands stably on its own due to osseointegration with the jawbone after some time. It also blends well with the dental structure and does not affect nearby teeth.

A dental implant is a replacement prosthesis in dentistry. You might need an implant to replace a knocked-out tooth or close gaps due to tooth loss. A dental implant is also used for aesthetic purposes, to improve the appearance and restore better functionality of the oral cavity. Dental implants could either be endosteal or subperiosteal, meaning inside the jawbone or on top of it, just below the gum line. Dental Implant Procedure

A dental implant treatment begins with a consultation and planning during an examination. Our dentist assesses the dental cavity on the area that needs an implant visually or through 3D imaging radiographs like x-rays and CT scans. To hold an implant, our dentist has to assess the jawbone's integrity and stability. If more jawbone is needed at the implant site, our dentist has to perform bone grafting to ensure it is of enough quality and quantity. Once the surgical site has been readied, for example, through an extraction and bone grafting, the patient has to wait for some time for the bone to heal. An implant with bone loss but no tooth present will require a grafting referred to as a bone graft to fortify the jawbone.

Once the jawbone is adequate and has healed, you will make an appointment for us to install the implant, a post. Our dentist makes an incision on the gum line and drills the jawbone to place the post. On top of the implant, a cap is placed to facilitate healing, which takes about six months to complete but depends on factors like bone quality, general health, and care. During this period, the implant osseointegrates, or bonds with, the jawbone. A temporary tooth replacement, denture, is placed on the implant site for cosmetic purposes. It is important to avoid putting pressure on the implant site during recovery to avoid complications like bleeding or soreness on a healing wound.

Caring for Your Dental Implant

It is important to adhere to regular follow-ups with our dentist to ensure no complications arise and that healing is successful. After the healing period has elapsed, the implant must be checked to ensure successful bonding. A dental prosthesis may be placed on the implant. This dental prostheses, an abutment, holds the pontic or crown. This will have to be made beforehand in a dental lab. Our dentist fashions the pontic or crown with tooth-colored materials. They take impressions of the abutment and cast it to make a custom fit crown or denture. It is then attached to the abutment.
